Week 3 of the Terrafit Challenge

Week 3 is complete!!!

Week 3 has been good but tough at times.  I’ve had some cravings and that’s been hard.  I’ve just been trying to push through and stay on track.

Chili

  • 1lb Extra Lean Ground Beef or Ground Turkey
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 1 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
  • 3 Chipotle Peppers with some Adobo Sauce
  • 1 Can Pinto Beans (rinse if you want, I didn’t because I like the taste and texture)
  • 2 Cans Diced Tomatoes
  • 1 Bell Pepper
  • 1 Yellow Onion

Salt to taste *(if you want it, I didn’t)

Brown the meat.  When almost done add onions and bell peppers to finish.

Add in spices then tomatoes and beans.

Dice up the chipotle peppers and add them in along with about a teaspoon of the adobo sauce they’re packed in.  This provides a pretty decent amount of spice.  You can always do less or even more if you like.  I like spicy things so I’m good with this.

Let simmer for an hour.

Serve with shredded cheese (I use low fat) and a dollop of plain Greek yogurt if you feel like it.

I’ve been trying to branch out and not eat the same exact thing all week.  I guess it would make my meal prep easier but I get bored.  I can do two days in a row of something, three if it’s just ridiculously good, and then I’m ready to move on to something else.

I love smoked salmon.  It is one of my favorite meats!  I bought some this week and that has been wonderful!

Fried Bananas are something that I enjoy.  I spray a pan with coconut oil spray and heat it on medium heat.  I cut up the banana, sprinkle cinnamon on the pieces and put them in the pan.  They’re done when they’re warm through.  You can get them out when they’re gooey or more crisp.  They’re delicious!

I upped my veggie intake this week too.  I just felt like maybe I wasn’t getting enough veggies.  I’ve really worked on getting plenty of protein and I guess the veggies just fell by the way.  Balanced.  That’s what I’m shooting for.

The Breakdown:

Weight Loss: 1.6lb

Am I happy with my weight loss?

  • Yes!  I’m just happy I’m still losing!  I thought I’d be down 2lbs but I have been building muscle this week so maybe that’s why it was just 1lb.  Either way I’m happy!

How do I feel physically?

  • Very good.  The swelling in my knee is lessening so that is making my workouts much more productive. Overall I’m feeling better and better.

What has been hard for me this week?

  • I want a piece of cake.  Really.  Bad.  This too shall pass.  Also, our schedule was a little hectic last week and it was really hard to make time to workout and I had to put in extra effort to get my meals in as well.  I hope week 4 will be a little less chaotic for us.

How do I feel about the program up to this point?

  • I still feel really blessed to have found out about this program.  It is really working well for me.  It’s a process and it can feel like it is taking forever but I keep seeing small changes in my body and that helps keep me motivated.

Goals for next week:

  • Work even harder.  I want to concentrate on abs this week.  That is by far my biggest problem area.

Is there anything I will do differently next week?

  • I still feel like I need to find the right balance in protein/fat/carbs for my body.  I’m close but not quite there yet.  I’ve also switched up my workout just a bit.  Mondays now will be 20/20/20 followed by Yoga.  Tuesdays I will be home (have to do laundry, etc. sometime!) so I will workout there.  Most likely it will be weights and abs.  Wednesdays will be Zumba.  Thursdays will be R.I.P.P.E.D. followed by Zumba.  Fridays will be home so probably weights and abs again.  Saturdays will be treadmill or bicycle followed by Yoga.  Sundays will be rest days but of course I will still work around the house and stay pretty active.  I think this new schedule will help me to balance out home responsibilities as well as get my workouts in.

Week 2 of the Terrafit Challenge

So week 2 is finished!

I tried to really push during my workouts this week.  I had a couple of days where I did two classes at the Y in one day and then the other days I tried to make sure that I did cardio and lifted weights each day.  I’ve really been feeling it.  I can tell my arms are tighter for sure.

Some pictures of my food this week:

Snappea Crisps and a cheese stick20150819_073820

Banana and peanut butter20150818_121706

Tex Mex Hot Mess with Cilantro Lime Brown Rice (4 servings)

Chicken:

  • 4 Chicken Tenders, chopped
  • 1 Large Bell Pepper, chopped
  • 1 Large Onion, chopped
  • 1 Can Rotel with Green Chilis
  • 1/2 c. Medium Salsa  (I like Pace or ChiChis)
  • Black Pepper
  • Paprika
  • Garlic Powder
  • Cooking Spray (I prefer Coconut Oil spray)

Spray your pan with cooking spray.  Add the 4 tenders.  Sprinkle with black pepper and garlic powder (depending on how much you normally like).  Then sprinkle on paprika.  Once again depending on your taste.

Add onions an green pepper.  Cook until chicken is done and veggies are tender.

Add Rotel and Salsa.  Simmer for 5 minutes.

Rice

  • 1/4 c. Cilantro Chopped fine
  • 2 Tbsp. Lime Juice
  • 1 c. Brown Rice
  • 2 c. water

Cook the rice in water until done.  (Cooking times will vary depending on the brand of rice.)

Add Cilantro and Lime Juice and stir it through using a fork.

Plate both items.  I had them separate in this picture but normally I put the rice on the plate first and then layer the chicken and veggies on top.

I serve with a tablespoon of plain Greek yogurt and a small sprinkling of mexi blend cheese.

It’s really good and really spicy.  I’m sure you could adjust the spice depending on how you wanted to fix it but I need spice.  It helps me drink more water and it keeps me from getting too bored with my food.

The Breakdown:

Weight Loss: 2lbs

Am I happy with my weight loss?

  • Yes!  I was really afraid I wasn’t going to see a weight loss.  I’ve been doing everything I should but I can tell my muscles are getting bigger and I just thought that the scale wouldn’t show a loss.  If I can keep a 2lb a week loss I’ll be happy.  If I can do more…great!

How do I feel physically?

  • I have felt so much better this week.  My knee is still slightly puffy, I’m still guessing where I’m doing more, but there isn’t any pain.  I’m just icing it and taking some OTC Ibuprofen as needed.  It hasn’t slowed me down.  I can feel that I’m physically stronger.  I can also tell that I don’t feel like I’m bloated or swelled.

What has been hard for me this week?

  • My cheat meal was my hardest.  Weird, I know.  I wasn’t expecting that.  I wasn’t really craving anything but it’s good to have a cheat meal to kind of shock your metabolism.  I had about 1/3 of a Stromboli from my favorite local pizza place (Pizza Town).  It tasted good but where I’m not used to eating bread it made me feel terrible afterward.  Not to mention the whole time I was eating it I kept thinking about how hard I’ve been working and how many calories/fat/carbs was in my meal.  I still didn’t have pop with it and I did have a salad before so that I could fill up on some good stuff first.  I never thought eating a cheat meal would be so hard.

How do I feel about the program up to this point?

  • I’m still really loving it!  I’m seeing results, I don’t feel deprived of anything and my body feels great!

Goals for next week:

  • I want to do at least two days with two classes each this week (and every week here out).  I want to continue losing weight and to see my jeans become more loose.

Is there anything I will do differently next week?

  • The only thing I will change will be some of my meals and snacks.  I don’t want to get burnt out on anything.   I’m doing a lot of research on clean eating and getting recipes.  Other than that I’m going to keep my workout schedule and keep doing everything else I’m doing.

TerraFit 90 Day Challenge

Some of the girls at the Y are in a weight loss challenge called the TerraFit 90 Day Challenge.  They asked if I wanted in on it and explained what goes on.  It’s kind of like a cross between The Biggest Loser and a Diet Bet.  I’m not sure if you’re familiar with Diet Bet but a few of the bloggers that I follow have had Diet Bet Challenges in the past.  I’ve never participated but they look like they work.

With the TerraFit Challenge you pay $25 to join your team.  They give you a list of “good” foods and “bad” foods, workout schedule, supplement suggestions, workout DVDs to buy, etc.  Basically it is everything you need to accomplish your weight loss goals.  Every day before 9pm you log in to their site and log what you’ve eaten and if you’ve exercised.  Every Monday you weigh in.  You also take before pictures to compare with your after pictures when the challenge is finished.  For the top losing teams there are cash prizes (those prizes depend upon the number of participants nationwide) and there are individual prizes, team prizes and best before and after picture prizes.

My personal goal for this challenge is 3olbs.  I think that’s a pretty tall order but I also think I can do it.

Working out isn’t a problem for me.  I enjoy it so much.  My diet is what is going to be rough.  I know I’m going to have to really plan ahead and really stay on top of it.  I’m trying to find meal prep ideas online.  There’s a lot of information so it takes a while to sift through it all.

Meal planning for me is always a challenge.  I’ve tried it before and I can’t ever seem to get in a good routine with it.  It’s always hard to do my meal and then do Rylan’s and Jason’s meals too.  Now that I’ve signed up to do the challenge there isn’t any whining or excuses though.  I have made a commitment and other people’s success (prizes) can be affected by my commitment.

There’s no turning back.

My feet are to the fire.

I’m accountable.

I feel better having said it publicly.

I will be updating on here every Monday about my weekly progress, how I’m feeling and what I think about the program as I’m doing it.

Today is day 1 of 90.signature

Polar FT4 & Fitmiss Delight Protein Powder

Jason had some insomnia the other night and bought me some things via Amazon.  They’re all things I’ve talked about getting and I think it’s super sweet he did that for me.  It was delivered as a total surprise!

I’m always borrowing his tools and half the time I can’t find what I need so now I have my own set.  And they’re pink which pretty much guarantees that they’ll stay mine… 😉  haha  I know this has nothing to do with working out but it was in the picture so…

I’ve wanted to try some more protein powder but I just hadn’t yet.  (I had tried some years ago but I had never liked it.  The flavor was always off and it didn’t mix well into anything.  I’d heard that it had come a long way so I was ready to try it again.)  He bought me the Fitmiss Delight Vanilla Chai with two shaker bottles.  Let me tell ya…this stuff is great!  It mixes better than anything I’ve ever had before, the taste is spot on and it’s only 90 calories a serving with 16 grams of protein.  It’s also gluten free for those who need that.  It is good to mix with water, almond milk or skim milk in the shaker bottles or to throw in the blender to do a smoothie.

20150624_142813

I have been eyeing a Polar FT4 for quite some time now.  I have a Garmin 110 for running but I wanted something specifically for weight lifting, gym classes, etc.  I’ve seen a lot of people with the FT4 on Instagram and different blogs that I follow.  I found this one on Amazon.  I think I paid between $50 and $60 for it.

20150625_194124

My first time using the watch and I burned 570 calories!  I love knowing what I’ve burned and the fact that I can look back and compare.  I’m also keeping a food & exercise journal.  In it I make sure to write about how I feel physically, what I’ve eaten, if I took a class or not and whatever other exercises I’ve done.

PhotoGrid_1435619438318

Last night’s workout!  This makes a total of 3 times I’ve used it and it seems to be working great.  It’s easy to set up and navigate through the options.  I love being able to look down at it during a workout and knowing how many calories I’ve currently burned.  It makes me push harder.  I want to do more and more.

I’m not where I want to be but I’m not where I used to be!  That’s what matters!signature

Workout Update

I had to take 3 weeks off from Zumba because of work and remodeling.  I’m back now and I’m so glad!  It is so hard for me to get back into something once I get out of the habit of going.  Once I start again though I’m good.

20150618_182259

Headed to Zumba this morning!  Ready to go!

My usual instructor is pregnant (Yay!!! I’m so happy for her!) so this is her last month until she has the baby and recuperates from that.  This month in conjunction with her regular class they are adding two classes with the lady that will be doing Zumba until she comes back. So now I’m taking Zumba 4 times a week right now and I’m loving it!  They’re talking of keeping it up…I hope they do!

20150618_210533

I don’t look great after a workout but I sure do feel great!  The feeling I have after physically working hard is like no other.  I don’t really care how I look as long as I feel good.

That’s what I strive for not only after working out but also in every day life.

This week coming up I’ll be trying some new protein shakes and a cleanse.  Hopefully they’ll help get and keep me on track.

New Workout Clothes!

When I started with the “Y” a couple of months ago I bought two sweat wicking shirts and a pair of workout capri tights.  I promised myself that if and when I had been going regularly I would go shopping and buy more…but not until then.  Its always nice to reward that good behavior with a shopping spree!  Anyway, I thought it was time.  (Aaannndddddd I was getting tired of wearing the same two shirts each week…)  I won’t be buying anymore workout gear until I need to go down in size.  More motivation!

I seem to always have good luck shopping at Belk and Kohl’s so that’s where I went…well, I shopped online because I have zero time to actually shop.  I normally have better coupons for each and I probably got them in the mail and just tossed them not thinking.  (Its been crazy around here, I tell ya!) So I found a coupon code for Belk saving me $10 and one for Kohl’s saving me 10% .  If I’m not mistaken I usually get free shipping with both places.  The things that I bought were on sale anyway too so I don’t think I faired too bad.

All in all I’m very happy with what I purchased!

Pretty Routine Here Lately

Other than working, normal family stuff and working out I’ve not had a whole lot going on.  We are planning a trip to VIR this weekend to watch the Moto America races.  This will be Rylan’s first motorcycle race.  I think he’ll like it since he is so motorcycle obsessed (every time he sees one he starts yelling “Bike!” “Bike!” and pointing haha) but with an almost two year old who knows how things will go?  I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best!

I have started my extra workouts this week.  I decided not to just add walking but weights as well.  So far so good.  I’ve also really tried to watch what I eat.  I did some meal prep Sunday but I’m going to have to work on that a little more.  I’ll figure out what works for me before long.  I’m sure I’ll see more results now that I’m moving more and eating better.

Okay, on to some cuteness!

20150502_160705Telling a big tale.

20150502_160706

This face.  It is just too darn cute.

20150503_113028Ava decided that she would just blend in with the toys.

We had lunch at Salsarita’s for Mother’s Day.  I didn’t want to do anything big and I wanted to stay close to home since I had so much to do.  I really do love that place, though.  Delicious, fresh, fast Mexican food.

20150510_134127He’s dipping everything these days.  He’s such a big boy….  My heart just swells with love for this perfect little human.

Workout Update

So I’m still going to Zumba twice a week.  I still love it!  Once last week and Monday of this week they have substituted R.I.P.P.E.D. for Zumba.  I wish I could do R.I.P.P.E.D. twice a week too (they offer the class) but I’m already pulled in too many directions.

I’ve lost 10lbs so far and toned up all over.  I know that muscle weights more than fat so I’m trying not to get discouraged when I don’t see the scale budge.  Its getting harder not to though, I have to admit.  I feel great though, I really do!  I have a lot more energy and I can tell that I’m building my muscle back in my left leg (it had gotten really weak after my injury).

Its time to do what I always dread when it comes to getting in shape: altering my eating.  Ugh…  I know that I need to start watching what I put in my body in order to see the results that I want to see.  I love healthy food, I love non healthy food….I just love food!  And, like everyone else in today’s society, I feel like my time is stretched thin as it is so meals need to be quick.

So this weekend I’m going to get a plan together and go grocery shopping (in between working on our rental, working on our home, etc.).  I’ve been reading up on meal planning, eating clean and IIFYM.  I’m going to ease myself into all of this.  Honestly, there is so much information out there on everything and I’m a little overwhelmed.  I want to play around with some things and find what works for me.  Everyone is different.

My plan thus far:

  • Weekly Meal Planning/Prep  (So that I can have more control over what I eat and not be tempted to eat bad when I’m in a pinch)
  • 2 Zumba Classes a Week
  • Walking in the morning 3 times a week (I’m thinking Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, weather permitting)

Once I get in a decent routine I’ll do an update on all of it.

It’s time to lose the baby weight!

Okay, it really is time to get serious about this.  I have basked in the glow of motherhood and neglected myself for long enough.  Summer will be here before I know it and I want to be able to get out and be as active as I normally would.  Not to mention I need to be the best me I can be for my family.  I need to be healthy in order to take care of them.

So this week I joined Weight Watchers Online and I’m learning the ropes.  I’m making a commitment to a healthier me.  I have officially started today and I’m ready for the change.

I’m going to try to post some of my favorite Weight Watchers friendly recipes with the points per serving as I learn more on this program.

I have a lot of goals this year and being heavy isn’t part of the plan.  I do cut myself some slack though on the weight.  Let me give you the whole story.  I used to be very active, outside all the time, showing horses every weekend, at the lake any chance I could be, just going non stop.  It was great!  I had so much energy…the more I went the more I could go!

Me and The Husband dressed for dinner! :)

Me and The Husband dressed for dinner! :)

Me before I tore my MCL & cartilage

Me before I tore my MCL & cartilage

Then I was injured in 2009 right in the midst of horse show season.  I twisted my knee (not on a horse or even around a horse) tearing my MCL & cartilage.  I am a bit VERY clumsy on two legs.  I kept pushing and riding/training hard (like an idiot) and was in pain for close to 2 years before I met my chiropractor and got straightened out for the most part.

Needless to say, pain will make someone depressed and not being able to be as physically active as I had been allowed me to gain weight.  It was really a rough time.  I couldn’t do what I once did and it really hurt my confidence.  As the weight came on it of course made everything feel even worse. It became a vicious cycle: pain, stress, food, no activity, depression, etc.  This was probably one of the worst but in the long run beneficial times in my life.  I reevaluated a lot and reorganized priorities and goals.  I did a lot of soul searching during all of that (emotional & physical) pain.  I had to find other outlets to channel my stress, pain and emotions.  I slowly began to get better physically and emotionally.  I found my “happy” again.

I think God gives us trials like that when we need to work on ourselves from the inside out.  It’s His way of giving us a “thunk” on the head and saying “Slow down and realize what is important”.  This is, at least, how it felt to me.

During all of this my husband and I decided to start thinking about a family.  The timing seemed right.  We were approaching 30 and it just seemed like a good age and good time in our life.  Then before long I was pregnant and you don’t really lose weight while pregnant so here I am heavier but so much happier.  My life is right where I want it and where it should be.

Me at Christmas last month

Me at Christmas last month

Now I just need to get back in shape and doing the things that I love.  I need the outside to look and feel as happy as the inside.
